The Girl In The Valley Light
The Girl in the Valley Light: A Fresno Model Shop Playlist
This playlist is built as a love letter to a film that doesn’t exist, inspired by one that does. In 1968, Jacques Demy wandered Los Angeles with a camera and found a kind of accidental poetry in its sun‑washed streets, gas stations, storefronts, and drifting cars. Model Shop wasn’t just a story — it was a postcard from a city that had quietly bewitched him. The real protagonist was LA itself, revealed through movement, light, and the constant hum of KHJ Boss Radio.
During 2017–2019, I traveled to Fresno for work from Indianapolis landing every Monday morning and returning home every Friday night. It was surprisingly comfortable and seemed the California of Deme. Fresno felt like it hadn't moved forward it was as if it was stuck in 1968. KYNO still played the Boss Radio format with a playlist from the 60s to early 70s.
The palm trees, desert heat, sunshine and buildings all felt vintage. I was fortunate that the AVIS car rental counter ladies recognized me every week and often provided me a free upgrade to a convertible Ford Mustang to drive around the Valley. The sun would set late and then the city would come alive after dark showing its neon and throwback DNA.
Fresno cast that same spell on me. The city’s wide avenues, neon remnants, and Valley light carried a familiar, hypnotic pull — not glamorous, not polished, but deeply atmospheric in a way only lived‑in places can be. Driving through Fresno felt like stepping into a Central Valley parallel to Demy’s Los Angeles: slower, stranger, more intimate, but just as capable of capturing a wandering soul.
This playlist imagines the film Demy never made — a Fresno postcard movie where the car becomes the camera, the city becomes the story, and KYNO replaces KHJ as the omnipresent narrator. It’s a soundtrack for a drifting day in the Valley: a young woman moving through Fresno’s streets, the radio stitching together her journey, the city revealing itself in fragments of sunlight, storefronts, intersections, and memory.
The Girl in the Valley Light is that imagined film.
This playlist is its soundtrack.
It’s built in homage to Model Shop, to the Boss Radio spirit revived in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and to the quiet magnetism of Fresno — a place that, for a time, felt like the center of a personal universe. It’s not nostalgia. It’s world‑building. A cinematic Fresno that exists between reality and reverie, carried along by the songs that would have been playing on KYNO as the story unfolded.
Press play and let the Valley drive.
